BOE Document Drop for November 2023 & Notes from a Teacher on the October 2023 Drop

Berkeley Heights BOEBOE Minutes

Teacher Feedback on October 2023 Drop:

We received a response to our October Document drop from an educator in the community pertaining to our questions on whether the BOE interviewed candidates for the Director Position:

Hi John,
You state in this article that Dr. Varley did the interviewing for the Director of STEAM position (Kelly Curtiss).
In one of my graduate-level classes, I read that the only position that BOE members can interview for is for the Superintendent. Otherwise, BOE members in NJ are not permitted to interview candidates for other positions such as Director, any other administrator, or teacher (I was told by my professor, an Interim Superintendent).
There is this advice from NJSBA (with some contradictory information throughout the article):

The SEC advised that it does not support board of education members conducting interviews for positions below that of superintendent. However, the SEC’s jurisdiction does not extend to actions of the board of education, only to actions of individual board of education members. Accordingly, each individual board of education may determine if it wants to have an interview committee for high-level administrative positions, pursuant to A04-12.

Please let me know if you have information or opinion otherwise.

BOE Committee Meeting Minutes for November 2023:
We are waiting on the Executive Session Minutes and Correspondence to the BOE for November and will publish it with the December Document drop.

One question we had connects to the complaint and grievance process which the minutes indicate will be published – however we were unable to find it on the District Website.
