Berkeley Heights Educators Express Concerns About Sidebar Agreement

BOE Agendas and Meeting Summaries

Laura’s Notes on the 04/18/2024 Berkeley Heights BOE Meeting

Education: B. Approve Sidebar Agreements (Attachment H).

This resolution is for the pay rate of $50/hour for summer curriculum writing.

We have heard from several educators who are opposed to this sidebar agreement as the pay for summer curriculum writing was at a per diem rate.

To better understand how per diem rates are compared to a $50/hour flat fee a simple equation would produce a more equitable, as it relates to annual salary, number.

Salary/184 (number of school days) = A

A/6.75 (hours in a work day) = B

For arguments sake, let’s take an educator with a $90,000 salary. Under previous sidebar agreements (honoring a per diem salary) for summer curriculum writing,  he/she would be earning approximately $72.46/hour.

$90,000/184 = $489

$489/6.75 = 72.46

The flat fee of $50/hour would be appealing to ONLY those educators who are getting paid LESS THAN $61,000. Anyone making over $61,000 would be getting paid less than their per diem rates, the standard curriculum writing rate of years past.
