Berkeley Heights Needs YOUR Independent Leadership

Community Voices

Once again, Murphy has sold out to his machine bosses—just as many successful politicians do. The same governor who guttled OPRA and opened the floodgates for political contributions has now made it even harder for non-machine candidates to get on the ballot.

Under the new law:

  • Partisan municipal candidates need as few as five signatures in small towns and up to 50 signatures in larger municipalities (50,000+ residents).
  • Nonpartisan municipal candidates, however, must now gather between five and 100 signatures, depending on their town’s population.

Why This Matters

Berkeley Heights needs Republicans, Democrats, and Independents willing to challenge the machine candidates this year.  We need leaders who are not tied to exclusive political clubs but instead prioritize our community’s best interest while partnering with schools and residents in an authentic, level, and fair manner.

More candidates on the ballot = stronger democracy.

  • It forces both party machines to spend more campaign money, draining their war chests and exposing how much they waste on local elections instead of investing in real meaningful initiatives that can improve communities.
  • It creates competition in what has essentially become a uni-party system, where Republican and Democratic candidates avoid tough questions, only appearing on politically connected and funded media outlets to protect their seats and influence.
  • It increases accountability in our Town Council. Last year, one political machine smeared the only council member who dared to ask hard questions about financial oversight—while members of his own party remained silent. They even inserted themselves into Board of Education matters they had no expertise in, all to create political opportunities for their candidates.  Thankfully this backfired.

Meanwhile, taxpayer dollars continue to pour out of our municipal government for lawyers and public relations firms, while thousands of dollars flood into local political campaigns—raising serious concerns about transparency and influence.

Equally troubling was last year’s attempt by these same political machines to seize control of our schools. Why are both parties so eager to dominate a $63 million school district budget yet expect our schools to surrender land without any revenue-sharing in return?  I think we all know.

What We Need

We need competent, independent-minded candidates who are not beholden to political machines or special interests—regardless of party affiliation.

If you’re willing to run and are not connected to any political cults clubs or committees, we will support your efforts to expand the candidate pool.

  • We’ll provide a free platform to amplify your voice and policy positions.
