Breaking Down Somerset County’s 2025 Primary Vote: Method, Party, and Municipality Trends

Overall Turnout

Somerset County voters cast 54,207 ballots. Democrats led with 32,068 ballots,while Republicans were at 22,139. The county’s voter rolls include 88,977 Democrats, 64,537 Republicans, and 103,369 unaffiliated/ 3rd party voters, with total registration at 256,883. Countywide turnout landed just above 21%.

Early Voting

Roughly 6,500 voters took advantage of early voting. Democrats led the way with 3,560 early ballots — about 4% of registered Democrats — while Republicans submitted 2,977 early ballots, or 4.6% of their registered base.

Among Democratic candidates, Mikie Sherrill pulled in 1,446 early votes, followed by Ras Baraka (906).

On the Republican side, Jack Ciattarelli led with 1,713 early votes, trailed by Bill Spadea (972).

Vote by Mail

VBM remained heavily Democratic. Of the 15,545 mail-in ballots, Democrats accounted for 11,400 – ~13% of registered Democrats. Republicans cast 4,145 mail ballots, representing 6.4% of their pool.

Sherrill led Democratic VBM returns with 5,287 votes, followed by Fulop (2,143).

Ciattarelli again led Republicans with 2,389 mail ballots, ahead of Spadea (952).

Election Day Voting

Most voters went to the polls on Election Day.

In-person machine voting accounted for 31,107 ballots. Democrats cast 16,281 votes (18.3% of registered Democrats) at the polls, while Republicans returned 14,826 (roughly 23% of registered Republicans).

Sherrill led Democrats with 6,101 votes, followed by Baraka (4,994).

Ciattarelli topped the Republican field with 8,499 votes at the polls, trailed by Spadea (4,645).

Municipal Breakdown

Broke Hard for Democrats:

  • Franklin: 6,177 Democratic votes

  • Hillsborough: 5,327 Democratic votes

  • Bridgewater: 4,206 Democratic votes

  • Somerville: 2,008 Democratic votes

  • North Plainfield: 1,905 Democratic votes

Broke Hard for Republicans:

  • Bernards: 4,143 Republican votes

  • Branchburg: 3,940 Republican votes

  • Warren: 2,329 Republican votes

  • Montgomery: 2,112 Republican votes

  • Bedminster: 1,824 Republican votes

LD-21 Somerset Republican Assembly Race

Nancy Muñoz received 4,628 votes and Michele Matsikoudis finished slightly ahead with 4,740.

Notes:

Sherrill maintained a strong lead across all voting methods, Baraka remained her closest competitor.

On the Republican side, Ciattarelli easily outpaced everyone across all methods.

Democrats leaned heavily on VBM, while Republicans turned out strongest in person on Election Day.

Municipal patterns followed long-standing trends: Democratic strength in larger towns, and solid Republican margins in Somerset’s suburban strongholds.
