Breaking Down Middlesex County’s 2025 Primary Vote: Method, Party, and Municipality Trends

Based on Data from Middlesex County Board of Elections- June 20, 2025

Middlesex County Democrats far outnumber Republicans on registration rolls and that difference was reflected at the ballot box.  However, with 74,000 unaffiliated voters – there is a moderate swing potential.  With that being said, overall turnout for the primary was still poor but higher than some prior cycles.

Total Registered Voters: 244,967

Democrats –~110,071

Republicans- ~61,000

Unaffiliated- ~74,000

 

Primary Ballots Cast: 90,905

Democrats – ~61,000

Republicans- ~30,0000

Turnout: ~ 37%.

 

Early Voting

As expected, Democrats made better use of early voting which is consistent with other counties.

Total Count: 10,086

Democrats: 7,134 ballots – ~6.5% of registered Democrats

Republicans: 2,952- ~ 4.9% of registered Republicans

 

Democratic Gov.

Sherrill: 2,285

Baraka: 1,051

Fulop: 1,434

Gottheimer: 616

Spiller: 472

Sweeney: 354

 

Republican Gov.

Ciattarelli: 3,018

Spadea: 1,375

Bramnick: 408

Kranjac: 142

Barbera: 52

 

Vote by Mail

Democrats also showed stronger on  VBM – also consistent with other cycles and other counties- and remains a core foundational advantage for the party.

Total Count: 41,001

Democrats: 31,090 ballots- ~28.2% of registered Democrats

Republicans: 9,911 ballots- ~16.3% of registered Republicans

Sherrill: 10,938

Baraka: 6,782

Fulop: 6,777

Gottheimer: 2,815

Spiller: 2,070

Sweeney: 1,586

 

Republican Gov.

Ciattarelli: 6,224

Spadea: 2,430

Bramnick: 782

Kranjac: 376

Barbera: 99

 

Election Day Voting 

Republicans love showing up to vote in person and this primary was no different – reflecting a continuing distrust of other methods.

Total Count: 37,594 ballots

Democrats: 22,388 ballots – 20.3% of registered Democrats)

Republicans: 15,206 – 25% of registered Republicans

 

Ciaterelli dominated the Republican side and while Sherrill saw healthy competition from Baraka and Fulop – she won easily in a crowded field.  Both candidates led across every voting method for their respective parties.

Gottheimer: 1,704

Spiller: 1,347

Republican Gov.

Ciattarelli: 7,518

Spadea: 5,076

Municipalities

Nothing new for Middlesex- Urban = Blue, Suburban = Red.

The Blue – Edison, Woodbridge, New Brunswick, Highland Park, and Perth Amboy.

The Red- Old Bridge, Monroe, South Brunswick, Sayreville, and North Brunswick. Edison,

Largest Turnout- Woodbridge and Old Bridge
