On 10/08/2025, the NJ State BOE made some important changes to its Standards and Assessment rules. The three most impactful changes…
Curriculum
School districts must make curriculum pacing guides and citations for core instructional materials used in classrooms publicly available. This change gives parents access to information about what’s taught and materials being used without having to send an OPRA request.
Standards
The Commissioner has the authority to offer support, require a corrective action plan, set deadlines, and monitor compliance as a result of new rules when Districts don’t meet standards. The state can also take additional steps which can mean bringing the issue under other laws or statutes.
Graduation Requirements
Pathways for 2025-2027 graduating classes became clearer -students can graduate by passing the state test, getting a qualifying score on an approved substitute test or by completing a portfolio (must be reviewed by the state). These students must also complete a financial aid application or qualify for an exemption.
Other Changes
- Career and technical education sections reference current federal law v. outdated standards.
- Students can take science assessments in native language (if available).
- Rules for alternate assessments for students w/ significant intellectual disabilities match fed requirements.
- Districts must keep statewide testing records longer and clarify how transcripts are documented.
