Assemblywoman Matsikoudis has many good reasons to remain in office. She continues to be a representative who appears to earn her place every day. Her communications to constituents share real information and opportunities to meet face to face. She is responsive to questions, even when you do not always say nice things about her decisions.
For example, her position on standardized testing is one I could not disagree with more. “Teaching to the test,” when it comes to state proficiency, is not necessarily bad, because you are teaching students to be proficient. Hopefully, we can change her mind on that eventually.
Her time in office has been purpose driven, supporting victims of sexual assault, ensuring greater accountability and oversight of mental health practitioners (both community based and in schools), expanding access to mental health services through the interstate compact, and making apprenticeships more accessible to students below the state’s median income.
She has also been a staunch defender of the Open Public Records Act, voting against the gutting effort spearheaded by Scutari and Sarlo.
If more representatives in New Jersey, on both sides of the aisle, approached their work the way she does, we would all be far better off.
