Every year we provide a preliminary look at what the April School Performance reports will look like based on the NJSLA release that drives the proficiency metrics. As you read the report it is important to remember the NJ School Performance Reports remains the authoritative source for the Dashboard.
For ELA, Math and Science- New Providence and Millburn perform at the top of the group Summit and Westfield show steady, above-average results. Chathams and Madison trend toward the middle or lower end depending on the subject, while Berkeley Heights shows a clear downward shift from its 2019 baselines – landing in the lower tier for both ELA and Science and mid-range in Math.
In any case, the data highlights widening performance gaps among otherwise similar districts and suggests that some are recovering academically faster than others.
ELA
New Providence leads the group in 2025 ELA performance, followed closely by Millburn and Summit. Westfield remains strong while Chatham and Madison sit in the middle of the pack. Berkeley Heights shows the lowest ELA average among districts this year, continuing a multi-year downward trend from 2019.

Madison and Chathams show the lowest math averages, with Chathams once again at the bottom of the group and showing little change from 2024. All districts fall below their 2019 performance levels. This Math table reflects only grade-level NJSLA assessments and does not include Algebra I, Geometry or Algebra II.

Algebra I
Algebra I proficiency shows a general downward trend across all Districts with only a few holding steady. Millburn and New Providence remain the highest-performing still both posted lower scores in 2025 compared to prior years. Summit, Westfield, Madison, and Berkeley Heights all experienced strong declines from 2019 baselines. Chatham has no district-level Algebra I entry in the files.

Algebra II
Algebra II results are uneven across districts mainly because not every district reports a district-wide total in all years. Among districts with consistent reporting, Madison and Summit maintain the strongest performance, with Madison reaching near-universal proficiency in 2024–25. Berkeley Heights and Millburn posted strong 2025 results, but several districts lack complete data for earlier years.

Geometry shows some of the strongest gains of any subject area especially for Summit, New Providence, Westfield and Madison. Millburn’s Geometry results rose sharply after 2019 and stayed steady. Berkeley Heights shows improvement over time but remains below the group As with Algebra I and II, Chatham does not have a district-level Geometry record in the files, suggesting the data was only released at the school level for those years.

Notes on the data
This report relies on the raw NJSLA files.
The Performance Reports apply state-defined filters and do not include all test takers.
This naturally leads to differences in outcome reporting between the two sources which is why we are careful to state that the performance report published in April and the Dashboard we publish soon after are the authoritative source.
Python and Big Query Were used to clean the data and produce the tables on Algebra1, Algebra II and Geometry with spot checks on different years to make sure they matched up.
Data for ELA, Math and Science were pulled from the NJ Spotlight Table
