This Week at NJ21st: Testing, Ethics and the Mechanics of Local Government

Newsletter

This week’s newsletter is heavy on education and we begin with an overview of the NJGPA Elimination Bill from an Educator in the District that covers arguments for and against the bill along with alternatives. Shauna provides an overview on the state of NJ’s School Ethics Enforcement– hint – it isn’t good- as it seems the folks who are using it the most are BOE members going after other BOE Members.

We have two new additions to our ‘Understanding Your NJ Government’ series, both covering local reorganization meetings.  The first was a straightforward walkthrough of a BOE Re-org meeting, the other however was a substantive comparison of two municipality re-orgs, how they differ and how those differences affect transparency and opportunities for resident feedback.

Going local, the Berkeley Heights BOE received a bit of affirmation this week as a labor complaint filed against the District by the teacher’s union as a result of a policy intended to apply uniformity and alignment to grading was dismissed.  Based on the BHEA response however, it seems that an appeal is in the works.  We end with Laura’s notes on the the Berkeley Heights Municipal and BOE re-org meetings.
