Previewing the March 26th BHPSNJ Agenda: Budget, Personnel, and Mental Health Contracts

Berkeley HeightsBHPSNJ BudgetBOE Agendas and Meeting Summaries

The biggest item on this weeks BHPSNJ BOE Agenda is the budget- the case for most if not all Districts in the state this month.  The 2026-27 preliminary budget lands at $63, 018, 617, a general fund tax levy of $48,652,092 and debt service tax levy of $489, 609 and includes a resolution that authorizes a $200,000 maintenance reserve withdrawal and set the travel max. for the 26-27 year at $43,750.  The public hearing looks to be set on 04/30/2026 at 730pm.

As we covered in our 7-District ACFR Budget profile Berkeley Heights enters this cycle in a typical position – one of the most expensive Districts with proficiency results that do not appear to match.  BHPSNJ ranks 1st of 7 in total cost per pupil, security, athletics and 2nd of 7 in total administration.  This spending into areas not connected to classroom instruction appears to match what we see when it comes to proficiency results in Math, Science and ELA, where Berkeley Heights consistently ranks in the lowest third of the 7.

Like Summit, residents will have to attend the meeting with no user friendly budget in hand, however they can visit our Berkeley Heights ACFR profile page as a basis for questions and feedback in the hopes that members of the Finance Committee or Administration may actually answer them.

Outside the budget theres a contract with Effective School Solutions for mental health services at GL for up to $317,249  ($312,249 if signed by April 15, 2026).

Personnel includes the appointment of Dr. Winston Jackson (Interim Assistant Principal at GLHS) from April 1 through June 18, 2026 at $500 per diem, along with an amended resignation entry for Jacqueline Bartlett.
