April 9th is Local News Day, a national day intended to call attention to and strengthen local news outlets. In NJ, this effort has significant meaning given the decimation of real news outlets throughout the state.
NJ21st is approaching its fifth year as an expanding not-for-profit, independent newsroom. We are proud of the work we’ve done to inform residents throughout the 21st District about their local, county, and state governments.
As our readers know, all of our content is free to access and redistribute. We are funded completely by donations, do not accept contributions from political organizations, and do not rely on advertisement dollars from political or corporate entities.
Throughout the day, we are going to highlight several stories we’ve covered that residents would likely have been unaware of otherwise.
To kick this off, we are going to begin with the set of articles that started it all.
In 2021, we published a series of articles regarding BHPSNJ and what have now been validated as violations of Educational Adequacy and bidding laws. Soon after, our correspondence with the Union County Prosecutors raised questions about potential violations of the Open Public Meetings Act (OPMA). This resulted in the District entering a de-facto settlement with the Prosecutor to change its meeting practices.
This was the start of a snowball effect regarding District practices, ultimately leading to findings of nepotism and other ethics violations.
To keep up and catch up with our trip down memory lane, you can follow our Facebook or Substack.
We also ask that you participate by asking family, friends, and neighbors to do the same.Learn more about Local News Day.
