What is Important For Families to Know about Tonight’s BOE Meeting

I believe this is intentionally blank so we can, once again, be party to the theatre that will undoubtedly occur at tonight’s meeting.  

I don’t gamble, but I’d be willing to bet Dr. Varley will use this opportunity to make a statement attributing all of the District’s issues to the negativity and toxic political environment. You know, because “positivity” has always worked to fix broken systems in the face of arrogant and immovable leadership.

It’s just a crazy coincidence that the declines in proficiencies, teachers and principal resignations, ethics violations, budget debacles, and OPRA lawsuits blew up under her administration over the past four years.  

PERSONNEL: Resolution A

Christine Seminerio is being appointed as Director of Elementary Education and Intervention. Christine comes to us from Madison where she was Director of Special Services. She received a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership this year.

PERSONNEL: Resolution D

Approve resignation of 5 staff members, including Business Administrator Julie Kot and Assistant Superintendent, David Greer.

PERSONNEL: Resolution I

Approve the resignation of MKM Principal Annie Corley-Hand.

Note her resignation letter: HERE.

I can guarantee Ms. Kot’s will be a rebuttal to her letter, likely citing our quality leadership under Dr. Varley.

Please note that when Kot’s letter is published, she has been here for about 3 years, and keep in mind what residents have had to say about her conduct in and outside of meetings. Mrs. Corley has been here for 14 years. Compare the track records and ask yourself, who is more credible?

BUSINESS: Resolution A

Approve shared services agreement with BHPD for Class III Officers for 2023-2028.

BUSINESS: Resolution B

Approve agreement to remit payment to a resident who filed an OPRA claim and won. 

This is significant because, under current OPRA law, the majority of cases are taken under contingency. Private citizens often do not pay for their legal representation on OPRA cases. The District remits legal fees to the plaintiff’s counsel when they lose. The bottom line – the District would do better with managing OPRA requests (like actually following the law) and posting information like minutes and the Budget as a general practice.  

Instead, the District’s approach has been to engage in costly legal battles they continue to lose in trying to hide information.  Simple upfront transparency and following the law would reduce legal costs and improve relationships with the public.
