In this clip from the 06/09 Berkeley Heights Town Council Meeting, a resident questions whether the Township is spending too much on the public library, even as he stressed that his own family heavily uses and values it.

The main concern surrounds the $1.73 million annual allocation to the library,  possible mission creep and whether unused surplus funds could be given back to families in our community.

The response he received was that the Council already asked about the issue and encouraged Sankal to bring the concern to the Library Board – set to meet in July.

The agendas and minutes provided through May 2026 do not appear to show a specific follow-up on whether the library’s undesignated surplus exceeds the statutory threshold for returning excess funds to taxpayers.
